As reported by the US military, the United States launched strikes on Iran’s military targets on Thursday after Tehran’s forces attacked three US destroyers sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran’s General Staff accused the US military of violating the ceasefire agreement. According to the news report released by CENTCOM, “US forces defended themselves from unprovoked Iranian attacks as US Navy guided-missile destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman on May 7.”

After the clash between Iran and the US, US President Donald Trump used Truth Social to tell Iran not to escalate further and that an immediate deal should be made. Trump said, “We’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!”

Strait of Hormuz Tensions Rise Following Iranian Restrictions and Tanker Strike

The already tense situation in the Strait of Hormuz is getting more heated after Iran reportedly implements tough new rules for ships traveling through the strategically important water route, in the context of a continuing blockade with both the US and Iran involved. As per documents leaked to CNN, shipping companies have to comply with the new set of regulations or else face attacks.

With this new set of procedures being adopted, all vessels intending to pass through the Strait—a key bottleneck for international oil transport—will be issued instructions through email by an organization claiming itself as the recently formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). It appears that ships will now need a clearance permit from the PGSA before making their way into the water route.

It is evident that the US and Iran’s ongoing blockade at this strategically important strait has resulted in a significant impact on the global front, as the world witnesses the biggest oil supply shock ever with rising energy costs around the globe.
