Washington: In fresh developments, reports are making rounds about renewed hostilities by the US against Iran. Sources told the US media, that military and intelligence officials cancelled their Memorial Day weekend plans in case of potential strikes. However, no final decision has so far been taken regarding the reported strikes.

“The President always maintains all options at all times, and it is the job of the Pentagon to be ready to execute any decision the Commander-in-Chief could make,” a White House spokesperson said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he has discussed potential challenges surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with NATO allies, stressing the need for contingency planning if maritime traffic remains disrupted. “We have to have a plan B for if someone is shooting” in the waterway, Rubio told reporters in Sweden. He added that countries including the US may need to “do something about it” if Iran refuses to reopen the strait, though he stopped short of endorsing a NATO role.

Meanwhile, the UN conference on the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty concluded on Friday without reaching a consensus on the ongoing Nuclear issues between Iran and the US. Iran’s mission to the UN accused the United States of derailing international nuclear nonproliferation talks through what it described as “excessive demands”.

In a post on X, the mission said: “The NPT Review Conference failed for the third consecutive time due to obstructionism by the United States and its allies.”

Earlier, Qatari delegation held talks with Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran in regard to the peace talks brokered by Pakistan. Besides the Qatari PM also had a dialogue with the foreign ministers of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan about the “ongoing Pakistan-led mediation efforts between the United States and Iran.”

According to local media, Pakistan’s military chief arrived in Tehran on Friday to advance mediation talks. Interior ministry heads are said to have held discussions on the issue.

In a telephonic conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran’s foreign minister Araghchi said the United States had repeatedly weakened diplomatic efforts through unfulfilled commitments, conflicting positions, and military actions, but stressed that Tehran continues to participate seriously in the Pakistan-mediated talks.
