A Saudi News Agency has reported that 88-year-old King Salman bin Abdulaziz AI Saud of Saudi Arabia is undergoing treatment after medical tests revealed lung inflammation. On Sunday, due to a high temperature and joint pain, the King underwent medical tests at the royal clinics at AI Salam Palace. This was followed by a previous hospital visit in April for a routine checkup. The King will be treated with antibiotics until the inflammation recedes.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep concerns over King Salman’s health. PM Modi posted on X, “Deeply concerned about the reports of the health of His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I join the people of India in wishing him a speedy and full recovery.”
Since the death of his half-brother King Abdullah in 2015, King Salman has been the governing monarch of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has seen significant reforms under his rule, especially the Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to diversify the economy of the Kingdom and reduce its oil dependency. Following King Salman’s health condition, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, has postponed his trip to Japan, scheduled for four days. The news about the postponement was confirmed during a news conference in Tokyo by Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, saying, “Saudi Arabia informed the Japanese government that due to the health condition of King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed’s visit, which had been scheduled to begin on the 20th, had to be postponed.”
On Sunday, before the news of King’s declining health condition, MBS met with the US National Security Advisor to discuss the war in Gaza and the final version of the draft strategic agreements between the US and Saudi Arabia. It is reported that the two countries are nearing a historic settlement that would extend the kingdom’s security guarantees and outlay a potential pathway to diplomatic ties with Israel.
