Spain began evacuating passengers from a hantavirus-stricken cruise anchored near Tenerife in the Canary Islands officials stated Sunday. The health officials have pressed checking all passengers deboarding the cruise ship. It is worth noting that the ship will not dock but will remain anchored, with officials ferrying in small boats, to ride 5 to 10 passengers along. Further, arrangements have been made to prevent the mixing of people on board the ship with local population.

Passengers will be taken off the ship once the evacuation flight are ready. Spanish authorities determine to complete the evacuation flights between Sunday and Monday. More than 20 different nationalities are said to be onboard. Following the Spanish passengers, others were flown out by the Netherlands, including Dutch, Greek and German passengers, and part of the crew. Other flights are poised to depart after that, including to the UK and US. The last evacuation flight is expected to leave on Monday to Australia.

Top World health body, and Spanish authorities, cruise company ocean expeditions said , ” Nobody among more than 140 people on board the MV Hondius is showing symptoms of the virus. 3 people died since the outbreak and 5 who disembarked the ship were infected. WHO chief along with Spain’s health and interior ministers are said to supervise the operation in Tenerife, the largest Spanish Islands on the cost of West Africa.

Spanish nationals on board will be transffered to a medical facility and quarantined. As per the passenger list, 13 Spanish passengers and 1 Spanish crew are present onboard. Only natives will quarantine in Spain the cruise operator said.
