The three-day mission by Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, to Tehran was completed on Saturday, April 18, 2026. This visit will prove to be crucial for Islamabad’s mediation role in resolving the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.

In his meetings with the Iranian administration, Field Marshal Munir discussed the crisis in great detail with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the commander of the country’s central military command. According to sources, the Field Marshal proved to be a vital conduit, having delivered a message to Iran from Washington outlining the framework for future negotiations.

This comes just after last week’s unprecedented talks, although not very conclusive, between U.S. and Iranian representatives in Islamabad. Despite the lack of a final breakthrough in the peace process, it was the efforts by Munir that managed to keep the two-week ceasefire intact until April 22.

An Increasing Role for Islamabad

The position of Pakistan being a “trusted interlocutor” has received a boost because of the relationship that Field Marshal Munir enjoys with international figures. American President Donald Trump recently complimented Field Marshal Munir as a “great guy” who is his “favorite field marshal.” The president also considered visiting Islamabad in case an effective peace deal was signed.

“The Field Marshal stressed the importance of holding talks and bringing about de-escalation,” Pakistani Military stated during Field Marshal Munir’s departure from Tehran.
