Melania Trump officially shares her deep disappointment over the accusations of plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s speech delivered at the 2016 Republican National Convention in the newly released memoir. The former First Lady only focuses on the Trump campaign and one of his staff, Meredith McIver, whom she accuses of not doing her homework to vet the speech she made.

Melania remembers the time she gave her speech at the convention: Initially, she was elated because the audience loved it. Nevertheless, this joy could not last because immediately, controversy involved the touching issue that she copied a photograph, thereby sullying her achievement. She writes in her memoir that she feels like her staff has betrayed her and says that her speech can be compared to Obama’s DNC speech of 2008. She also wonders why no one thought it necessary to put measures in place to avoid such a scandal, adding, “Why was the speech not vetted?”

Melania reveals how McIver, an old friend of Donald Trump’s and a Trump organization’s in-house writer, helped her prepare the speech. Over time, when the couple discussed something, Melania started to think about Obama’s speech from years ago. “When analyzing many speeches of the previous First Ladies, Michelle’s focus on such values as hard, honesty, and kindness meant a lot for me”, she notes these values were familiar to her from her Slovenian childhood.

Although Melania encouraged Trump by praising her speech, the further scandal gave her a sense of loneliness and insecurity. She shed light on how this episode does not only affect her but also her husband’s campaign. When the former First Lady goes back to this dark period in America’s political history, she emphasises the need for the right kind of backup at crucial junctures. It is noteworthy to dissect all the conflicts of interest and controversies that characterized Melania’s campaign, courtesy of her recent revelations about the brutally difficult work that comes with it.
