Senior Nepalese mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa has achieved another historic feat and again broke the world record for the number of Everest ascents to hit Sunday, climbing to the summit for his 32nd time.
The 56-year-old mountaineer, famous as the “Everest Man,” made it to the 8,848.86-meter level at 10.12 am as noted by Nepal’s Department of Tourism. The milestone was reached by him while running an expedition under 14 Peaks Expedition, officials said. The successful climbing was confirmed by the department’s field office located at Everest Base Camp, and mentioned in the local media too, such as The Kathmandu Post.
Kami Rita Sherpa was born at the Thame village in Solukhumbu district, Koshi Province in January 1970 and started his professional mountaineering career in 1992. He first got a chance to climb Mount Everest in 1994, and has developed into one of the world’s most experienced high-altitude climbers.
In years gone by, among the mountains he has climbed in the Himalaya were K2 (twice), Mount Lhotse (twice), Manaslu (three times) and Cho Oyu (eight times) at heights of over 8000 metres.
The Department of Tourism (DoT), Nepal, congratulated him on his accomplishment, citing its positive impact on the country’s international mountaineering and adventure tourism image.
Also on the day, in another feat of achievement, another climber Lhakpa Sherpa, popularly known as “Mountain Queen” made her 11th successful climb to the summit of the world.
The leadership and tourism body of Nepal are happy to see the two climbers and have called their feat an instance of “extraordinary courage, discipline and life long dedication towards mountaineering in Nepal”.
