Authorities in China officially raised their concerns with Afghan Taliban leaders after IS militants killed a Chinese mine worker. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told Afghan representatives they needed to investigate this matter deeply since China took it seriously.
Mao expressed deep shock about the strike and condemned it thoroughly as he offered sympathy to the victim’s family.
The violent attack took place on Tuesday evening in the northern Takhar province next to the border with Tajikistan. A provincial police spokesman announced that unidentified gunmen shot and killed the Chinese worker while he travelled. According to Haqqani, local authorities did not know the victim’s movements since he did not receive proper security details for Chinese visitors in Afghanistan. No one knows why he travelled.
On Wednesday, ISKP declared they committed the attack as the regional group Islamic State Khorasan Province, stated SITE Intelligence Group. ISKP has assaulted foreign visitors and important infrastructure sites throughout its fight-to-control insurgency against the Taliban and outside forces in Afghanistan.
Chinese workers and projects in Afghanistan need increased security due to this recent attack. China puts heavy investment into Afghanistan’s mining industry because of the country’s valuable mineral supplies but faces serious security challenges because of it.
The attack shows how difficult it is for the Taliban leadership to protect both foreign workers and fight against extremists who harm stability in Afghanistan.
