Dhaka: Violence erupted in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Sunday night as students clashed with hundreds of protesting paramilitary personnel seeking job regularisation. At least 50 people were injured, claim reports.
The clashes began around 9:20 p.m. near the Secretariat after Dhaka University students gathered upon hearing news that Ansar members, a paramilitary auxiliary force, had detained several students, including Nahid Islam, a student leader and adviser in the caretaker government. The students reportedly attempted to disperse the Ansar demonstration demanding permanent positions.
Both sides threw bricks and chased each other during the confrontation. Police and army personnel were deployed to control the situation.

Meanwhile, two Bangladeshi diplomats serving at the High Commission in India have been relieved of their duties as per the order of the caretaker government in Dhaka. The order came into effect on August 17. Shaban Mahmud, First Secretary (Press), was asked to relinquish his position at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi before the end of his contract.
Ranjan Sen, also a First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladeshi consulate in Kolkata, relinquished his charges on Saturday. Sen was asked to leave before the completion of his contractual tenure, which was set to end in 2026. He had been re-appointed by the erstwhile Sheikh Hasina government and may take some time before returning to Dhaka.
