New Delhi: Taking the ongoing highly controversial case of the untimely death of young actor-model Twisha Sharma further ahead, the Supreme Court of India has invoked its suo motu powers to register the case. The Supreme Court has decided to register the matter amidst increasing public anger, suspicion of a cover-up from the side of the investigating agency, and procedural lapses in the early stages of the probe.
The highest court in the country has registered the matter under the caption “In Re: Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of Young Woman at Matrimonial Home.” The high-powered three-judge bench consisting of the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi will be hearing the matter on Monday, 25th May 2026.
Key Factors that Led the Supreme Court to Intervene
The swift intervention from the top court has come at a time when local investigating agencies face serious questions regarding the conduct of the probe in its early stages. Twisha Sharma, who was the winner of Miss Pune and a model based out of Noida, was discovered dead at her matrimonial residence in Bhopal on May 12.
Influence Allegations: Relatives of the deceased have persistently sounded the alarm regarding the background of the in-laws. The wife’s mother-in-law Giribala Singh, herself a retired district and sessions judge, has been accused of leveraging her judicial networks to tamper with the local administration soon after the tragic event took place.
“Hastened” Anticipatory Bail: During proceedings related to the case in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Tushar Mehta, the solicitor general of India, noted that an anticipatory bail was issued in favor of the retired judge “in a very hurried manner” just three days after the death on May 15.
Evidentiary Manipulation Suspicions: Family members of the deceased have criticized the preliminary post-mortem findings in light of the presence of certain unexplained physical wounds and the incorrect mention of the height of the woman.
“Taking into account the gravity of the matter, its public interest dimensions, and the unusual circumstances surrounding the case, the intervention of the Supreme Court shows that institutional accountability will be rigorously tested,” commented a legal expert in New Delhi.
