Chennai: Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana, the India Meteorological Department informed on Wednesday.

Authorities have evacuated thousands of people from low-lying areas in both states. The flooding in Chennai following heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Michaung have claimed 17 lives so far, officials said on Tuesday. Many residential areas are flooded, and videos show cars floating in water.

Cyclone Michaung has made landfall between Nellore and Kavali in Andhra Pradesh, the state chief minister’s office said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said that the storm will have wind speeds up to 110km/h (68mph), which will reduce as the cyclone dissipates after landfall. Around 9,500 people in Andhra Pradesh have been evacuated to 211 relief camps.

“Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG”, pronounced as MIGJAUM) weakened into a Depression over Northeast Telangana,” IMD wrote on X.

“Extremely heavy rainfall recorded in coastal Andhra Pradesh! Bhimadole (district Eluru) recorded 24 cm rainfall, Kukunooe (district Eluru) 22 cm, Narsapuram (district West Godavari) 21 cm, Chintalapudi (district Eluru) 21 cm and Narsipatnam (district Anakapalle) 20 cm”, tweeted IMD.

On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung hit land, causing continuous heavy rainfall in Chennai. Despite the reduced intensity from Monday, the downpour persisted, bringing the state capital to a halt.
The storm-induced floods disrupted daily life, leading to casualties and damage to properties.
On Tuesday, the Greater Chennai police announced in a statement that 17 individuals lost their lives in different incidents as a result of the floods caused by the cyclone in the city.
