Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is with Iran during its “time of sorrow” and expressed sadness over the demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who passed away in a helicopter crash.

“We are extremely saddened and unsettled by the untimely demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of Iran.” We will never forget his contribution to the bilateral ties between Iran and India. My deepest sympathy is with the Iranian people and his family. In a post on X, he stated, “India stands with Iran in this time of sadness.

After the Iranian leader’s chopper vanished, Prime Minister Modi expressed “deep concern” and said he was praying for the president’s and his entourage’s safety, involving Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

In addition, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar remembered his encounters with the two Iranian leaders and expressed his condolences for their deaths. I was stunned to learn that Iran’s foreign minister, H. Amir-Abdollahian, and president, Dr. Ebrahim Raisi, had died in a helicopter crash. Remember the numerous times I met with them, the last one being in January 2024? We send our sympathies to their families. He posted on X, saying, “We are standing by the Iranian people during this tragic time.”

Along with President Raisi and other important figures, the chopper was a part of a convoy that included Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian. The plane lost contact with the ground nearly half an hour after takeoff, allegedly due to inclement weather encountered within a mountainous section of the east Azerbaijan province.

India struck a 10-year agreement on May 13 to manage the vital Iranian port of Chabahar, which will enable it to increase trade with Central Asia.

The announcement of the Iranian president’s passing coincides with a rise in regional tensions, especially in light of Iran’s recent escalation of hostilities with Israel and the Gaza conflict. President Raisi, who has been in power since 2021, has often reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestine in his recent speech to inaugurate a dam.
