Gone are the days when jobs at Meta and LinkedIn were crem de la creme jobs. Employees of the Meta giant woke up to shock as the firm Wednesday decided to layoff 8000 employees and fired 600 employees in LinkedIn.
Staff in Singapore – the largest in Meta branch in Asian region was the first one to receive layoff notices. Employees in Europe and the US are also expected to receive messages in their respective time zones. The company cited the layoffs as a part of the broader restructuring strategy as it ramps up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and AI-driven products while attempting to streamline operations and cut costs across several business units.
The retrenchment exercise is expected to primarily affect teams not directly linked to Meta’s expanding AI business. Departments like engineering, product development, operations and support functions are said to be affected
Additionally, reports have revealed that around 7,000 workers have already been internally reassigned into newly created AI-focused divisions as part of Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s broader push to make AI the company’s central long-term business strategy.
Ahead of the May 20 layoffs, Meta employees were encouraged to work from home as the layoffs rolled out. The company also reassigned around 7,000 employees to new AI-focused teams working on products and AI agents.
As of March, this year, Meta had a total of 80,000 employees.
