Allahabad: A public interest petition was heard in the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court on Wednesday (September 25) regarding the British citizenship of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. In the petition, a demand was made to conduct a CBI inquiry on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. While hearing the petition, the bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Om Prakash Shukla has sought a reply from the Government of India on this matter.
Actually this petition has been filed by Karnataka BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir. This PIL was filed 3 months ago in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court challenging the election from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha in June. It states that Rahul Gandhi is not a citizen of India but of Britain. On this basis, a demand was made to cancel Rahul Gandhi’s election nomination.
While hearing this petition in July, the court rejected it. On this, the court said that the petitioner can first complain to the competent authority under the Citizenship Act. However, the petitioner says that he has sufficient evidence that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. Therefore, he has filed the petition again.
While hearing the case, the bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Om Prakash Shukla has sought details of action taken on the complaint made to the competent authority of the Central Government under the Citizenship Act 1955. Along with this, the court said that before taking any decision, it would like to know the decision of the Government of India, what and what kind of action they have taken on this complaint. The bench directed ASG Suryabhan Pandey to obtain information from the Union Home Ministry in this matter. The next hearing of the case will be on September 30.
