The Rekha government is determined to eliminate the threat of floods that plague Delhi annually. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi government has approved the construction of a flood protection wall along the Yamuna River. Under this project, a robust 4.72-kilometer-long protective wall will be built along the Ring Road from Majnu Ka Tila to the Old Railway Bridge (ORB). The Chief Minister expressed hope that the wall will be completed before the Yamuna floods next year.
CM Rekha Gupta gave information
From the devastating floods of 1978 to the floods of 2023 and 2025, this section of the Ring Road was submerged, halting all of Delhi. The Chief Minister clarified that the current embankments are not sufficient for future challenges, so the government is now moving towards a permanent solution.
According to government data, the Yamuna reached an all-time high of 208.66 meters in 2023, shattering the 1978 record. In 2025, the Yamuna also surpassed the danger mark (205.33 meters) and reached 207.48 meters. The Chief Minister stated that the threat of such floods will persist in the future, and the proposed wall is a strong and sustainable solution.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Delhi government is moving forward with a commitment to completing this project on a war footing. The target is to complete the entire wall before the next monsoon season in 2027. He stated that this project is not limited to flood protection alone, but is an effective initiative towards strengthening urban infrastructure, protecting the environment, and improving the quality of life of citizens. He expressed confidence that the construction of this wall will provide permanent relief to Delhi from the annual flooding problem.
