Suryakumar Yadav might have led India to a ICC Men T20 World Cup victory earlier this year but his recent lack of performance with the bat has raised eyebrows in the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the team management. The 35 year old batter made 242 runs in the world cup campaign and his best moment was an unbeaten 84 runs against the USA in the first match of the world cup. But he could not be consistent in subsequent matches.
His dip in form has persisted in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, in which he has only scored 106 runs in four games with a top score of 51 against the Delhi Capitals. This has created a mounting controversy regarding his future as a leader to major events yet to come.
Reports indicate that the upcoming T20 series of India against Ireland and England will be significant in understanding whether or not Suryakumar will continue with the captaincy in the next cycle that involves: T20 world cup in 2028 and Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 where cricket is likely to be included.
Regardless of the investigation, head coach Gautam Gambhir is allegedly still in support of Suryakumar as his preferred captain. Gambhir himself is also in demand of a contract extension that will see him guide the team till the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia, which will be after his existing contract, which will expire in 2027 during the ODI world cup.
The next few months will perhaps prove to be defining to the captainship of Suryakumar and the long-term goals of Gambhir with the Indian team.
