The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, alerting about extremely heavy rainfall along with gully water logging in the city and gusty winds in the area during the weekend.
The weather department says Mumbai and suburban areas are likely to get heavy to very heavy rains with isolated areas likely to record extremely heavy rains. Some places can experience winds up to 60 kmph.
Precipitation of over 100 mm in 24 hours was recorded in several parts of Mumbai in the first 24 hours of Saturday. Refugees are, however, moving in public transport as some complained of delays in the suburban railway system despite the pouring rain, civic authorities said.
Heavier rains have also been reported over neighbouring Thane and Pune with roads being waterlogged and normal life disrupted by traffic jams.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data revealed that the areas of Bandra, Parel, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar and Mankhurd are worst affected with more than 120 mm of rain falling each.
Police urged people to not drive anywhere unnecessary, stay out of places that are already flooded and await official weather updates as heavy rains are forecast to persist over the weekend.
