At least three people were killed and one seriously injured when a speeding BMW crashed early Sunday morning off a Coastal Road and into the sea in Mumbai.
The accident occurred when he was driving the BMW from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali, around 5 am on the opposite end near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College. The driver allegedly lost control while driving at high speeds, according to the police station and Coastal Road Control Room.
The situation can be seen on video in the aftermath of the BMW driving across the edge of the road into an under-construction parking lot below. The car was seen flipping in the air before landing at the construction site. The damage to the car, created by the impact, was serious.
The entire crew sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to Nair Hospital. Three were said to be dead, and the fourth to be in critical condition in the trauma ward.
As per the reported update the deceased were 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhirya Seth with some reports suggesting the third man is around 25 years old but has not been identified. The seriously wounded victim was estimated to be about 20 years-old.
According to reports, the passengers were students studying in Ahmedabad and were on their way back from a visit to Marine Drive in Mumbai. There are reports that they are BBA students who were lodged in paid guest homes.Some reports have said that they were BBA students living in paying-guest houses.
The footage of the scene, which was released after the crash, revealed the whole mangled scene of the BMW, and some debris and police officers at the scene. A preliminary cause of the accident has been identified as overspeeding and the accident is being investigated.
