Now fresh violence broke out in Kamjong district of Manipur when a woman was allegedly shot dead on Friday evening in Chassad village of the district, leading the government to impose prohibitory orders as well as increasing security in the area.

The officials said the incident occurred around 9.40 pm in Kuki-dominated Kuki-Uregai (Naga) District’s Chassad village, where the community is mainly Kuki. Domkhonei Touthang, mother of five, was the victim. She allegedly was shot in her neck and died minutes later.

Reports say that the Manipur violence came to a boil overnight, as shooting erupted and several houses were allegedly burned down. Authorities said houses were burned but not how many properties were damaged and how much damage was done had not been determined at the time of the latest update.

As to stop further unrest, district administration issued prohibitory orders under the provisions of Section 162 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The ban is within a 400-metre radius of the Chassad police gate junction and against gatherings of 5 or more people.

The orders are in effect until they are repealed. Exemptions have been made for personnel of the security teams, magistrates, essential-service workers, and for people holding special permits. The District Magistrate has also ordered the Superintendent of Police to ensure that there is adequate security at the restricted zone.

The killing has been condemned by Kuki-Zo women by Forum, Delhi and NCR. It demanded impartial and timely investigation, holding accountable those responsible, and providing humanitarian, psychological and financial aid to the victim’s family, especially her five children.

During the forum, the safety of women and civilians during the ongoing conflict in Manipur, along with the need to take concrete steps to safeguard civilians, was raised.

The latest incident comes at a time when security is a concern in the state and tensions have been hhigh throughout the state. Details of the circumstances surrounding the shooting and of the foiled attempt at a botched overnight party are expected.
