Security personnel arrested the man on Tuesday when they allegedly recovered live bullets from him during a security check at the swearing-in ceremony of Himanta Biswa Sarma (HBS) in Guwahati, police officials said.

The incident had happened when an elaborate security arrangement was in place in advance of the oath-taking ceremony of the newly formed Assam government at the Veterinary College Field at Khanapara. Officials said that the man was screened at one of the entry gates, where security personnel allegedly found a couple of live rounds of ammunition with him.

Police, on seeing the person, immediately took him under their custody, and sent him to Basistha Police Station for questioning. An investigation is ongoing to find out how the bullets were acquired and if there was any security risk in connection with the incident, authorities said.

Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine what happened when the bodies were found and all possible angles are being explored, a police official said.

The swearing-in ceremony went ahead in an orderly manner with a number of police and multiple layers of security measures. The event was attended by senior BJP leaders, party members, government officials and invited guests.

The incident has brought security preparedness concerns to the fore in the lead-up to high-profile political events, particularly senior leaders’ events and – events with large numbers of people. The ongoing investigation will include surveillance video from a number of venues and from entrance hot spots, police officials said.
