In a response to the recent claims by United States President Donald Trump, Iran’s newly appointed head of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, warned that Tehran will not fully reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz until all conditions are met.
Taking to his social media handle on X, Rezaei outlined Iran’s position on the Persian Gulf shipping route and cleared the air on fulfillment of the required conditions for opening of the strait.
“IRAN’s message is clear: the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the U.S. ends the war and blockade,releases Iran’s frozen assets, and agrees to a region-wide ceasefire, including in Lebanon and Gaza,” he wrote in the post. Rezaei added, “Until all conditions are met, the Strait will remain closed.”
His remarks came after Trumps claim of full control on Hormuz during a breifing at Joint Base Andrews.Trump said, “I don’t trust Iran. I’m the last person who trusts Iran. They’ve lied to me constantly. We have total control over the Strait of Hormuz right now. They don’t have control. We have total control. We own it.”
During a Tuesday meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yu in Tehran, Rezaei detailed Iran’s stance on Strait of Hormuz, stating that the U.S. must end the war on Iran and its regional allies, and release Iran’s blocked funds. He noted that Iran has also communicated additional conditions to the U.S. through intermediaries involved in the negotiations over the recent weeks.
He reiterated that if Iran and Oman, and the other littoral state in the Strait of Hormuz reach an agreement on transit routes in the waterway, that agreement will have no impact on Iran’s decision to close or reopen the strait.
Tensions continue to intensify over the global energy chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a major flashpoint in the ongoing U.S. and Iran conflict.
