INDORE: The proclaimed cleanest city in India, Indore is reeling under a serious shortage of water amid an intense heat wave that is testing the limits of local infrastructure. Several areas within a number of wards of Indore are experiencing severe water shortages, making it difficult for citizens to access any form of basic necessities.

In certain crowded areas, there are now instances of people rushing towards the spot where the tanker truck stops to collect any available water. Although the IMC has responded to this crisis by using tractor tankers, it is said to be inadequate in the face of the increased demand caused by the heat wave.

Protests and Road Blockades Disrupt Palda

Angered by the water shortage in their locality, locals, supported by leaders from the opposition Congress party, protested against the government.

However, there was a huge escalation of the tension at the bustling Palda junction, when Councilor Kunal Solanki from Congress party led a group of agitated citizens to block the roads completely. Protests have been continuing with residents blocking the roads and shouting slogans criticizing civic mismanagement.

The protestors’ demands include:A substantial increment in the number of water tankers being sent to the affected area each day.Stabilizing and extending the river Narmada pipeline network to those wards which lack it.Rigorous inspection of the phenomenon of water hoarding.

For households that have been most impacted by the crisis, the day starts with finding water. It is stated by the residents of the protest area that water scarcity has made them go to the trouble of walking miles to collect water manually or pay extremely high charges to buy water from the private water tankers. Activists believe that unless there is an aggressive expansion of the supply chain by IMC in the near future, public unrest will grow in intensity.
