Severe monsoon currents are prevailing over different areas in the country, continuously advising the IMD to release different rain warnings. In the Pune and Satara districts of Maharashtra, on the next Monday, the IMD forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall and gave an ‘orange’ alert. This alert signifies a considerable amount of rainfall that may precipitate negative circumstances, such as the possibility of flooding. Furthermore, the warning has also been given for a ‘yellow’ level of activity: Using words, this means that Mumbai, Thane and other surrounding regions should be ready for enormous amounts of rainfall.
The IMD blames the extreme activity, such as rain, deep depression over southwest Bihar and Northwest Jharkhand, and low pressure over southwest Rajasthan, besides the vicinity area. The weather systems defined above are likely to persist and impact the weather situation in Maharashtra and therefore, necessary warnings on heavy rainfall in places like Pune and Satara are advised. The situation is expected to start with a progressive improvement starting on Monday.
There have been reports over the recent past that Pune has been receiving heavy downpours and has been facing problems over the days, such as falling and waterlogging. The IMD has predicted that there will be light to medium falls at one or two places in the ghat zones on August 6 and moderately heavy showers on August 7. In this regard, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is likely to visit the flood-hit areas of Pune on Monday to meet district administration and independent disaster relief teams.
In Kerala, following recent severe landslides in Wayanad, the IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for six districts: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaru are some of the districts affected by the phenomenon. High rainfall may be expected in the state, and that would compound existing problems. Besides, the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) tide forecast has also warned about tall waves and ‘Kallakkadal’ on the Kerala coast till 11:30 pm Monday.
