Pravesh Wahi, a BJP councillor representing Rohini East, has become the new Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and this has brought a radical change in the civic body of the national capital. Wahi won by a majority of 156 votes, and this was enough to surpass the necessary majority of 137. He also won with the help of 14 councillors of the Indraprastha Vikas Party. In the meantime, congress candidate Hazi Zaraf only had nine votes in the election.
Meanwhile, Monika Pant, a BJP councillor in Anand Vihar, was elected as the Deputy Mayor by the same number of votes (156). BJP leaders Jai Bhagwan Yadav and Manish Chadha also made it to the standing committee along with AAP councillor Jalaj Chaudhary who also made it to the panel.
Mayoral poll electoral college had 273 members comprising of 249 councillors, 14 nominated MLAs, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and three Rajya Sabha members of Delhi. Aam Aadmi Party decided to leave the voting field, a step which it said was tactical in making the BJP responsible in running the capital.
Wahi said that he owed his victory to the party leadership and promised to work on cleanliness and development in Delhi. The outcome is following AAP in the former mayoral position, which underscores the change in the politics of the city in terms of the municipalities since the re-election of civic authorities in the year 2022.
