Karnal: Disruption in rail traffic on the Ambala-Delhi sector was caused by a mishap that occurred on Tuesday morning when some bogies of a goods train tilted off the track at a station in Karnal district’s Taraori. Seven to eight cargo containers of the train bound for Delhi from Amritsar reportedly toppled off from the coach. Fortunately, the public was not harmed in the process, and nobody died in the calamity.
The derailment occurred around 4:30 am, which blocked several trains with different schedules from arriving at the station. At least 12 trains were cancelled while 27 others were routed to other tracks to contain the situation in this certain heavily traversed rail segment.
Sub-Inspector Dinesh Kumar of Haryana Police posted at Karnal said four bogies and two wheels of the goods train also got detached. Moves were promptly made to remove the track while the authorities advised that normalcy would reign in the next few hours.
A number of railway officers and personnel from Jamalpur’s Karnal, Jahangirabad’s Ambala and Nangal Railway Station in Delhi visited the site to ascertain the reason behind the incidence. The Northern Railway itself gave a confirmation, and it was established that some trains, such as the Amarpali and Unchahar Express, among others were involved. Also, two, long-distance trains were brought to New Delhi station for termination. The interruption affected the passengers at Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, and Ambala stations, as most were stranded.
This brings another derailment incident in the recent past in which two coal loaded wagons of a goods train had turned over at Faridabad station in Haryana. The repeat cases lead to anxiety about railway safety and sound structures of facilities in managing heavy traffic in the movement of goods by rail.
There is ongoing work to return regular service on the Ambala-Delhi section; the key priorities include the track clearing and people’s and freight trains’ protection. It confirms that security measures along with maintenance checks should be established to avoid future disturbances.
