New Delhi: Delhi Water Minister Atishi has strongly written a letter to the chief secretary calling for action besides stating that there are several areas in the capital where sewerage had started overflowing. This raised concern as Atishi pointed out clearly, making several areas provide drinking water that is contaminated with sewer water. She instructed the chief secretary to personally resolve the matter and punish anyone who was is charge and negligent causing the current problem.
As Atishi described the situation to the minister, she noted that if matters progressed as they were, it was poised to evolve into an outright health issue. This was elaborated in a tweet by Atishi for example, she was troubled that in many parts of Delhi at the moment, sewer water is in drinking water, and this could explode into a public health epidemic if not addressed shortly.
The minister has been closely observing the situation, and he has had a few review meetings with the Delhi Jal Board, local representatives and DJB officers. In these meetings, she testified that particular complaints and their addresses were passed to the respective authorities for action. But Atishi complained about what she described as incompetence by blaming the very slow progress on the failure of departments such as the urban development department, Delhi Jal Board and the finance department to co-ordinate well. She complained that these departments were just pointing fingers at each other instead of collaborating to address the problem.
To Atishi’s disappointment, she pointed a finger at the chief secretary as the administrative head of the bureaucracy to correct such important issues. The chief secretary is the head of the bureaucracy as such it becomes your duty to deal with and dispose of matters such that the people do not suffer due to the laziness or negligence of officials.
