N Chandrasekaran, who earlier had declined a board’s five-year extension on his tenure, has been chosen to remain Executive Chairman of Tata Sons for a further five year term.
It is a result of multiple months of discussions, in the board as well as in the Tata Trusts, within Tata Sons, Tata Trusts said in a statement on Thursday. The Tata Trusts had given an unanimous vote of thanks for the leadership of the Tata Group by Chandrasekaran from 2017 and recommended the re-appointment of him for another five-year term.
In September 2025, the Tata Sons board was in principle agreed for him to re-appoint. When the subject was raised formally in February 2026, however, the resolution was put on hold since no consensus was achieved. This topic was further taken up at Board meetings in May and June, where no resolution was reached.
Chandrasekaran has told the company that he will not be sought for re-election when his current contract expires on August 12, 2026.
That changed on September 3 when his decision was discussed at the Nomination and Remuneratering Committee of the Tata Sons board. After a discussion, the committee unanimously asked Chandrasekaran to think again and added that even with his contribution he was doing it in the interest of the Tata group.
Chandrasekaran indicated at board’s meeting on 17 Sept a setback to his decision, saying he’d reconsider. The board then unanimously re-elected him to a new five-year term of office as Executive Chairman.
Tata Sons also stated that it will take steps to meet the requirements of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) relevant guidelines. The company will approach the RBI for their inputs along with the Tata Trusts and other stakeholders on the compliance requirements to be followed.
Since joining in 2017, Chandrasekaran has captained the Tata Sons’ journey and in charge of their business stewardship.
