The Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) proposed for Delhi is going to give traffic police a real-time information on road conditions, stolen vehicles, accidents, traffic congestion, sudden loss of vehicle speeds etc.

The system will be seamlessly integrated with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) of Delhi Police, Centre’s e-Sarathi and VAHAN platforms, said senior police sources. The initial implementation will feature over 2,500 cameras while the broader project will be rolled out in three phases, an implementation that will be executed in 42 major traffic corridors.

Track stolen vehicles after FIR is lodged would be one of the major features included in this. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Tyagi added that it would be alerted to the traffic inspector to concerned area through CCTNS.

In case the vehicle, which was stolen, moves into the jurisdiction, traffic zonal officer would also get information regarding the time when the stolen vehicle is likely to move into their jurisdiction. From there, the officer can help coordinate with local police with further actions.

The system will also generate alerts when accidents occur, traffic comes to a halt or vehicle speeds fall significantly below normal levels. These alerts can be used by traffic officials to make contact with the affected areas, can manage traffic alternate routes and advocate traffic clearance.

Currently, the Delhi Traffic Police has 5,000 officers for 6,500 sanctioned. The potential volume those vehicle-tracking needs could involve is evident from the number of motor vehicle thefts in the city: There were about 35,014 motor vehicle theft cases reported in 2025 according to the police data.

The ITMS will be based on an integrated Traffic Control and Command Centre. Also under the project, there will be adaptive traffic signals and automated enforcement, which would allow traffic management measures to adjust to the actual use of the road and not just the fixed signal timing and manual work.

The Union Cabinet has approved an expenditure of Rs 1789.52 crore for traffic management project on artificial intelligence with a time frame of 24 months.
