The Delhi court has granted a three-day interim bail to senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia to attend his niece’s wedding. Sisodia, Delhi’s former deputy chief minister, is under arrest due to an alleged excise policy ‘scam.’ The relief period, provided by Special Judge M K Nagpal, spans from February 13 to 15, allowing Sisodia to participate in the wedding festivities.
Sisodia faces charges in corruption and money laundering cases being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), respectively. The CBI apprehended him on February 26 last year regarding purported corruption in the formulation and execution of the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. Following his CBI arrest, he was subsequently taken into custody by the ED on March 9 on related money laundering allegations.
Earlier this month, the court had granted Sisodia permission to visit his ailing wife once a week while in custody, in both cases related to the scrapped Excise Policy 2021-22. Sisodia, through his counsel, senior advocate Mohit Mathur, had sought custody parole twice a week to visit his wife, who has been battling multiple sclerosis for over two decades. Mathur emphasized Sisodia’s compliance with court directives and stressed the criticality of the visits, highlighting his wife’s deteriorating health condition.
Sisodia’s wife’s frail health, requiring assistance even for mobility, has been a primary concern. Mathur underscored the absence of any violations by Sisodia regarding the court’s mandates, further emphasizing the situation’s urgency.
In granting the temporary release for the wedding, the court acknowledges the familial obligation while ensuring compliance with legal proceedings. The case underscores the intersection of personal exigencies and legal procedures, adding complexity to Sisodia’s ongoing legal battle.
