Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a series of talks with some of the top global economies in his planned lawfare trip across four countries – Germany, US, Canada and Belgium– during December, with trade talks and strategic partnership expected to come under the scanner.
The Ministry of External Affairs had not officially issued the schedule yet, but it is said works are being done on the visits. The suggested tour would arrive at a time when India is seeking an opportunity to negotiate with several major nations for a trading agreement, while simultaneously trying to strengthen relations with other nations across various sectors such as defence, energy and technology.
Germany Visit May Begin December Tour
The tour is likely to commence in Berlin where Modi could attend India-Germany InterGovernmental Consultations. India and Germany have been enhancing their strategic relationship in the fields of trade and investment, defence, technology, education and mobility. In 2026, the two countries are celebrating 75 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The leaders of the G20 Summit sit in Miami on December 14-15, so Modi is expected to be in the United States from Germany. Side talks with US President Donald Trump may be in the offing. Also under consideration is a potential QUAD leaders meeting with India, the US, Australia and Japan, but with no official word on that.
The ongoing talks between the two sides between trade and tariff tensions are likely to continue as India is expected to remain abreast of tariff concerns as well as Washington’s new policy on Russian energy supplies.
Canada, Belgium Visits To Focus On Trade
Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is likely to be the first that will be discussed a lot in Canada leg. However, Ottawa is hopeful that it will be able to finalize its negotiations with India under CEPA by the end of 2026. The two countries have set an objective of expanding bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion by 2030.
Modi may end up in Belgium, where he can hold talks with Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The fact that this week would come off India-EU trade negotiation, which were finalized in January 2026, could also come in the way. The deal is now in the EU’s formal endorsement, which includes European Parliament consent.
