Raipur: Elephant terror continues in Kakanesa village of Wadrafnagar. Villagers are in panic due to elephant terror. Elephants are creating havoc by entering the village. Given the movement of elephants, announcements are being made asking people to remain alert.
A group of 3 elephants has been camping in the area for the last 10 days. Elephants are damaging village houses and at some places, they are damaging wheat crops. Due to this, the villagers are troubled. People are also being warned by making frequent announcements in residential areas to avoid elephants.
Given the elephant terror in the area, a holiday has been declared in all the schools around Kakanesa village. These elephants are camping in the Wadrafnagar forest range.
For the last one week, these three elephants have been spreading terror in the surrounding villages of Wadrafnagar city like Kotrahi, and Kolhuwa village. While wandering here, the elephant reached Gram Panchayat Kaknesa. Where a house has also been demolished and the crops in the fields are being caused huge damage.
Chhattisgarh faces frequent human-elephant conflict, often resulting in fatalities and injuries. Habitat loss, encroachment, and resource competition contribute to the conflict. Vulnerable communities are particularly affected, with significant emotional and economic repercussions. Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach, including habitat conservation, community awareness, and mitigation measures.
In the last three years alone, over 66,582 cases of crop destruction, 5,047 cases of house damage, and 3,151 cases of property damage due to elephant encroachment have been reported. This translates to roughly 75,000 cases in just three years, highlighting the significant human-elephant conflict in the state.
