“Operation Numkhor,” a Customs Department operation, uncovered a major vehicle smuggling racket. Investigations revealed that approximately 15,849 vehicles were registered in India via Bhutan without paying taxes and duties. Operation Numkhor was launched to uncover this. Numkhor, a Bhutanese word for vehicle, has defrauded the government of hundreds of crores of rupees. Initially, the Customs Department investigated only 35-40 luxury cars in Kerala, but as the investigations unfolded, the number increased to 15,849.

The names of several celebrities and film stars are also emerging in this case, who flouted the rules and purchased these vehicles. Almost all the vehicles were fraudulently registered in the northeastern states bordering Bhutan. Assam alone had 464 vehicles registered. More than 50 vehicles were seized from Kerala. Customs officials identified a Coimbatore-based gang that had been running this network for the past 10-15 years.

Meanwhile, actor Dulquer Salmaan was asked to appear in person for questioning by the Customs Department in connection with the seizure of two cars allegedly being smuggled from Bhutan. Additionally, Amit Chamakkal’s luxury car was also seized by officials today from his home in Ernakulam.
