New Delhi: Congress Chief, Mallikarjun Kharge, sparked off an enormous political controversy by calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “terrorist” at a press conference in Chennai on Tuesday. This statement, made on the last day of election campaigning for Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly polls, has been heavily criticized by the BJP party and furthered the heated election environment.

Calling out the AIADMK for their collaboration with BJP, Kharge asked how the party could join hands with the Prime Minister, when the party stands for the values of Annadurai. “How can they join hands with Modi? He is a terrorist,” said Kharge.

“A desperate and frustrated PM Narendra Modi, with nothing meaningful to show for the last 12 years, turned an official address to the nation into a political speech, full of mudslinging, and outright LIES. The Model Code of Conduct is already in place, and it was very clear how PM Modi misused official machinery to attack his opponents. This is a travesty of Democracy and the Constitution of India”, he wrote in his long tweet against PM Modi today.

He further said that PM’s party did not believe in equality and justice and that the coalition had eroded India’s democracy.

Clarification and Retaliation

As soon as his statement became viral, Kharge clarified that he meant the term metaphorically and not literally, and that he was alluding to political terrorism.

“I want to clarify… what I mean is that Modi always threatens. The institutions like the ED, I-T, and CBI are in his hands. He is terrorising people and political parties,” Kharge explained.

The BJP was quick to launch a blistering counter-offensive. Union Minister Piyush Goyal demanded an immediate apology, stating that the Congress had “stooped to a new low” by insulting a democratically elected leader. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla added that this was the “175th abuse” hurled at the Prime Minister by the Congress, calling it a display of the party’s “frustration.”
