Cyclone Michaung, which battered Chennai with half a meter of rain in just three days, has left the city’s manufacturing sector reeling. Industrial areas like Ambattur, Thirumudivakkam, Perungudi, and Thirumazhisai experienced severe flooding, causing significant damage to factories and halting production.

Preliminary estimates suggest losses of around ₹7,000 crore (US$ 840 million) to the industry, with MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) being the worst hit. These smaller units often lack the resources and infrastructure to withstand such natural disasters.

The immediate impact includes disruption of production schedules, damage to machinery and equipment, and loss of inventory. The long-term effects are yet to be fully assessed, but they are likely to include job losses, delays in deliveries, and a decline in investor confidence.

The most affected are the auto component manufacturing units in Padi and MSMEs in Ambattur, sources said. Padi, home to factories of several TVS group companies such as Sundram Fasteners, Wheels India, Brakes India and Lucas-TVS, which have a combined turnover of ₹25,000 crore, has been particularly hit, with the plants under several feet of water.
