Raipur: As the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections approach, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is taking proactive steps to uphold and celebrate the region’s traditions. In a recent announcement, he introduced the ‘Bajrangbali Akhara Protsahan Yojana’, aimed at preserving and enhancing traditional wrestling hubs within the state. Speaking at an event in Raipur, the state capital, Baghel revealed plans to establish a premier wrestling academy in Raipur to encourage the sport and its practitioners further.
Highlighting the cultural significance of wrestling, the CM mentioned the state’s rich history of hosting Mallakhamb and wrestling tournaments, particularly during the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami. According to him, these events foster feelings of unity and communal harmony. He fondly recollected his childhood memories of celebrating Nag Panchami, a day when he drew images of “Nag Devta” and participated in religious ceremonies.
Ashok Yadav, the head of Danteshwari Vyayamshala and Akhara, expressed gratitude towards this initiative. Emphasizing its importance, he said this is the first time the state government has put forward a plan directly benefiting traditional wrestling centers. As he proudly mentioned, Yadav’s center has been the training ground for many state and national-level champions.
The political undertones of this move can’t be overlooked. The Congress party appears to strategically place itself on the religious and cultural forefront, traditionally dominated by the BJP. By emphasizing themes associated with “Bajrangbali,” Lord Hanuman, and other deities like Lord Ram and Krishna, the Congress hopes to captivate the voter base. This strategy was evident during the Karnataka assembly elections earlier this year, and now, with the Chhattisgarh polls on the horizon, such initiatives are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping electoral outcomes.
