Raipur: As the Monsoon Session of the Chhattisgarh Assembly progresses, Friday marks the fourth day, and discussions on the no-confidence motion, raised by opposition BJP MLAs, were postponed due to a late submission of relevant documents. Law Minister Mohammad Akbar revealed that the motion against the Cabinet, along with the points raised, was received with a significant delay, necessitating the postponement to the following day for thorough examination.
Despite protests from the opposition, the House designated a time slot from 12 noon to 5:30 pm on Friday for the discussion on the no-confidence motion. Consequently, the House adjourned until the scheduled time on Friday to allow ample time for debates and deliberations.
During the Monsoon Sessions day, the Chhattisgarh Assembly approved three amendment bills, one of which was the Chhattisgarh Legislature Member Disqualification Amendment Bill. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rabindra Choubey presented the bill sparking a discussion, between the governing party and the opposition. Dr Premsai Singh Tekam played a crucial role in the opposition’s attempt to challenge the government.
BJP MLAs Shivratan Sharma and Ajay Chandrakar questioned Dr. Tekam’s acceptance of the post of Planning Commission Chairman in light of the amendment bill introduced for him, implying internal discord within the opposition party. MLA Dharamjeet Singh expressed his concerns about Dr. Tekam’s previous ministerial tenure and the circumstances leading to his appointment to the post.
In response to these accusations, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ravindra Choubey pointed out past instances where opposition leaders were removed from positions, highlighting instances of political maneuvering on both sides.
During the session, the Chhattisgarh Private Universities (Establishment and Operation) Amendment Bill 2023 was unanimously passed. This bill included the establishment of Shri Davda University as the 17th private university in the state. Higher Education Minister Umesh Patel’s proposal received support from the opposition as well. The university, to be located in Bhelwadih village, Abhanpur, Raipur, will offer diverse courses ranging from journalism, arts, and science to education, hotel management, vocational education, MPhil, and PhD programs.
