The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has protested nationwide, saying the Congress government has been going ahead with plans to wind up the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak welfare programmes for the state of Telangana.

The rallies are taking place at constituency and mandal centres and the BRS Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) called upon party leaders, elected representatives and cadres to join them in this protest outside the legislations building.

KTR claimed Congress government resorted to a recent High Court decision as a fig leaf to end the schemes. He claimed that it was not just about providing financial support, but also about providing dignity and dignity to the daughters from economically weaker families through such programmes.

KTR, who led the Call to Action, reminiscenced in a phone conversation with BRS leaders, MLAs, MLCs, former public representatives and State general body that the schemes were launched by the former Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on October 2, 2014.

The financial help was first set at Rs 51,000, later raised to Rs 75,116 and finally to Rs 1,00,116. During the BRS Government’s tenure, about Rs 13,000 crore financial assistance has been provided to almost 13 lakh families, under the schemes, KTR added.

KTR also had raised a query before the High Court on the handling of the matter by the Congress government. He said “the Government has had four chances to file a counter but it didn’t do so and he wondered why it wasn’t strong enough in dealing with schemes that protect poor families.

The BRS leader also claimed that the government would be now relying on the HC order for scrapping Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak.

The state-wide protests aim to bring pressure to bear on the Congress government to continue the schemes and the BRS is asserting that marriage finance assistance continues to be significant for the economically weaker families of Telangana all over the state.
