On Sunday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the groundbreaking activity of starting work on the foundations of Adani Power Limited’s 3,200-MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant inChapar in Dhubri district, which is one of the largest private investment projects in Assam.
The project will require investment of about Rs 48,000 crore, and it will make a big contribution to Assam power generation capacity. Adani Power estimates that the project will generate approximately 20000 to 25000 jobs directly and 3500 indirectly in the construction phase and will provide approximately 3500 job along with their family during the operation of the project.
It will have a capacity of 4×800 MW and will be put into operation in stages from December 2030 onwards. It will employ the up-and-coming ultra supercritical technology, to enhance thermal power production efficiency.
The Chapar project fall under the umbrella of Adani Group plans to invest in Assam. The group had announced plans of investment of Rs 63,000 crore in the state in November 2025 comprising of the Rs 48,000 crore thermal power project and separate PS projects by Adani Green Energy.
At the stone laying function, Sarma said Assam was fast turning into an energy hub of the Northeast region and the Chapar project was a key success of the pledges made during the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0.
Adani Group Director Jeet Adani said that it will generate employment options and also give opportunities to local businesses, contractors, suppliers. The group started picking up investments in power, aviation and cement which turned into projects in the state, he said.
Adani Power has also announced that its power project “Chapar” of 3,200 MW will be developed under Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFO) model and overall capacity will be secured through a long-term power supply contract with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).
