Another incredible record reached during this year’s T20 cricket world cup came in a Group C West Indies Vs Afghanistan match where Nicholas Pooran hammered 36 runs in one over. This was in a match held at the Daren Sammy Stadium in Gros Islet where Pooran produced this rare feat, which has only occurred five times in T20 cricket, for 36 runs to be scored in an over.

This over was bowled by Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, and it turned into a nightmare for the right-arm pacer. Pooran started the over with a full and wide delivery, and he hit over the ropes for six over the third man. The pressure was well applied when Pooran was given yet another overstep on the next delivery, and he pulled it to deep mid-wicket for four. The no-ball was then compounded by the delivery of a bouncer that went over the keeper’s head and fetched five wides.

That was not the end of the chaos. Pooran came to face a free hit, but he was not able to make the most of it in the T20 World Cup game. However, the misfortune this time persisted with Afghanistan when the third legal delivery of the over hit Pooran’s legs and went for four leg byes, and again the keeper was beaten in the attempt.

Pooran took it to Omarzai and got four and two sixes in the remaining three balls of the over, and it went into the record books. This ensured that Omarzai became the second bowler in Afghanistan, Karim Janat included, to give away 36 runs in a single over in the shortest format of the game – the T20I. Janat faced a similar embarrassment earlier in the year when Indian players Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh took him for 36 runs in an over.

Omarzai’s over was particularly costly due to the ten extra runs it included. Unfortunately, in the course of the match, he committed five wides, a no-ball, and four leg byes. Meanwhile, in the match against India, Janat was able to make an additional run in the over.
