The Indian women’s recurve archery team comprising Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod won their country’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s recurve team event in Archery World Cup Stage 2 held on Sunday. The Indian team defeated hosts China in a close and thrilling shoot-off to claim India’s first gold medal in the women’s recurve team category at Archery World Cup since 2021.

The Indian team dominated the initial stages of the competition as they managed to win the first set easily. However, the Chinese team bounced back with a vengeance as they scored two consecutive victories to tie the match. In the fourth set, the teams fought neck-and-neck to finish the round evenly at a score of 4-4, leading to the all-important shoot-off.

Tight nerves aside, the Indian team handled the situation with coolness and grace. In the shoot-off, India scored 28 against China’s 26. It was none other than veteran Deepika Kumari who delivered the last shot requiring an eight score to win the match. She struck a perfect nine score to end proceedings in favor of her team.
