Boxer Lovlina Borgohain on Monday got the applause of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising a question while spotting a garbled map of Indian at a restaurant during the 2026 Commonwealht games in Glasgow.
The statements came in during a meeting with the members of the Indian contingent returning from Scotland with the Commonwealth Games after their return. Borgohain raised the trash issue during his usual visit to the restaurant with the Indian boxing team.
The Assamese boxing sensation was a member of India’s historical boxing campaign at the Commonwealth Games, where the Indian team won 10 medals in boxing. They’d been celebrating their impressive effort with a meal at a Glasgow restaurant.
While looking through the restaurant’s menu, Borgohain noticed that the map displayed did not include India’s northeastern region. Later, she went to talk to the restaurant management and stated her concern in a polite manner.
This was a sore spot with me, please don’t take amiss. No such thing could be given to Borgohain, explaining the reason why the issue was important to her and why the North East is missing in the map of India.
She also noted that the map affixed to the outside of the store seemed to leave out the Northeast area. Missed representation of Northeast was a hurt that goes on personal level as the Northeast community was represented in other ways by Borgohain who hails from the region.
The boxer wanted the restaurant to be mindful of this and make sure that this was corrected in the future.
Her involvement brought the incident to the fore after it was publicized and PM Modi had called her “brave” for raising the issue.
The episode has also brought in the importance of geographical representation of India in a proper manner and the role and status of the Northeast region as an integral part of India.
