As the opening bell rang for the International Fight Week in Las Vegas, Mc Gregor made headlines. The Drake Curse played its way as Conor McGregor lost to Max Holloway sustaining a knee injury as spectacled by the commentators Joe Rogan, Daniel Carmier and Jon Anik who replayed the footage. Canadian wrapper Drake had staked his latest wager of $1 million on the Irishman ahead of UFC 329.
For the unversed the Drake curse, is a long run internet joke that proves itself right every time. Notable names like heavy weight champion Anthony Joshua and even McGregor himself have been victims of the so called curse.
It was after a long vacation that Mc Gregor returned to stage his MMA return as he squared up against Max Holloway in a welterweight clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. McGregor reverted to his trademark antics, delivering fireworks at pre-fight press conferences ending up to a disastrous defeat.
The MMA world has been abuzz over the past few weeks, eagerly waiting McGregor return. The 37 year was on a recovery break since he suffered a leg break against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. However, the ‘notorious’ rush towards Holloway was a miss, throwing Gregor on his feet. He appeared unsteady after gaining balance and it was an another attempt that made him kiss the canvas. While the former two division champion managed to get back on his feet, he struggled to stay upright and that was the sign. Approaching closer to Holloway, Gregor slipped to fall again for the third time because of a ‘knee injury’ he sustained in the previous attempts as said by the commentators who played and replayed the shot to derive a conclusion.
The match was cancelled as the referee waved off the contest citing an injury as he recognized the Irishman was struggling to attain balance.
Interestingly, Holloway in an interview previously predicted the Drake curse would work in his favor when he was informed that his opponent was bet on.
