Indian player Rishikanta Singh Sanampam clinched silver in the men’s 60 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games, producing a record-breaking display in the snatch. With his performance, India now has its second medal on the ongoing Games following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze earlier. Rishikant finished with a combined total of 264 kgs, a 121 kg snatch and a 143 clean and jerk.

“I dedicate this silver medal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire nation,” Rishikanta told media in an exclusive interaction after his podium finish. “I fought very hard, and today I won a silver medal. I am very happy. This medal that I won today isn’t mine; it belongs to everyone, to all of India. To everyone who supported—the Indian Government, the Indian Weightlifting Federation, the supporting staff, and my circle of friends… this is for everyone.”

At the swimming tournament, Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Anish Gowda, and Dakshan Shashikumar qualified for the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final.

Meanwhile, gymnast Tapan Mohanty is competing in the men’s all-round final. Tapan Mohanty dropped to 12th position after scoring just 11.600 in the horizontal bars. His overall score tally is 48.750, while Scotland’s Reuben Ward leads the chart with 33.200 after four rounds.

Meanwhile, India eyes another, India eyes a gold at the current Commonwealth Games with Mirabai Chanu, who will attempt in 82 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk to win gold on paper.

TAGG athlete Pravegtha Samantha qualified for the vault final at the Commonwealth Games today, finishing seventh in the qualification round with a score of 13.025. She will be seen at the finals on 27th July.

India has traditionally enjoyed success in Commonwealth weightlifting, with the discipline contributing a major share of the country’s medals over the years. Mirabai Chanu, is a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, bidding for a third successive title in Glasgow this time.

In gymnastics, Pranati Nayak’s women’s vault bronze at Birmingham 2022 remains India’s most recent medal in the sport, while swimming has also shown signs of progress after Srihari Nataraj became the first Indian to qualify for a Commonwealth Games final in the men’s 100m backstroke in 2022.
