India’s woeful T20I series loss to England has reportedly led to a detailed assessment of the players as well as the coaches by the BCCI. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has been signed until 2027 but his job appears to be placed in jeopardy after India had poor form in the shorter format.

Led by newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, India suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I at Bristol, handing England an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series after the opening game was washed out. India had already lost the second T20I by four wickets before enduring a humiliating 125-run defeat in the third match, where they were bowled out for just 76 while chasing 202.

The series loss also marked India’s second consecutive T20I series defeat as reigning T20 World Cup champions, following their historic 2-0 loss to Ireland. It was India’s maiden bilateral T20I series debacle against Ireland, creating new doubts on the Indian side.

Both series defeats have come after the BCCI’s decision to replace T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I skipper. In addition, England’s victory in the ongoing series is also noteworthy because it is their first bilateral T20I series win over India in a series of two or more matches in history.

Reports suggest that the BCCI will sit over the team’s performance in recent matches and may make some important decisions prior to the upcoming assignments.
