The BCCI selection committee has now explained the reason behind sacking the world cup winning captain Suryakumar Yadav. The Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the move was part of a broader assessment of India’s future plans in the format.
Addressing the media after the squad announcement, Agarkar admitted that removing a World Cup-winning captain was not an easy call. He said the selection committee reassessed the team’s roadmap following the World Cup and eventually concluded that a leadership change was the best way forward. He also revealed that he personally informed Yadav about the decision, describing the conversation as difficult but necessary in the interest of the team.
Just months after leading team India to a historic third T20 World Cup win, SKY has lost both the T20I captaincy and his place in the national squad. The bold move of sacking SKY has emerged as one of the biggest talking points following the announcement of India’s squads for the Ireland and England series and the 2026 Asian Games.
Beside many ifs and buts, the selectors have witnessed a big dip in SKY’s batting form in last one year. He was one of the most successful T20I batters India has produced in the last few years. Between January 2025 and March 2026, he scored 702 runs in 35 T20 internationals at an average of 26. Before taking the team India’s captaincy charge, his numbers were significantly stronger. He averaged 43.60 and had amassed four centuries and 20 half-centuries, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier T20 batters.
The decline became more noticeable after he assumed the captaincy in July 2024. Since then, Yadav has averaged 25.88 in T20Is, registering six half-centuries and four ducks.
