Thousands of Argentina fans gathered New York’s Times Square and made it look like the stadium was filled up with blue and white, to kick off the World Cup 2026 final against Spain, a carnival atmosphere.
Under the billboards, which are to be adorned with Spain’s INA, the fans are already singing, dancing and pronouncing their chants for the side of the defending champions. Celebrations were shared online in videos that soon spread like wildfire on social media with many commenting that what happened was a taste of the electric atmosphere they will see at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday for the final.
Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos is sure that Spain will be the next World Cup champions while Argentina supporters were raised on the belief that they will defend the title.
The 2014 World Cup winner was impressed by the consistency, coordinated approach and “fair play” of Spain’s campaign and believes that Luis de la Fuente’s team has been the highlight of the tournament. With 10 years at Real Madrid’s club, Kroos is well acquainted with many of the key members of the current Spanish team, and he feels that they are better outlining the fact that they are of a greater quality.
Spain have had an amazing World Cup run, only giving up one goal and setting a new World Cup record for having six shutout games in one tournament for men’s soccer.
The Spaniards went scoreless in their opening match against Cape Verde but came roaring back after that with a string of six wins to reach their first World Cup final in 13 years since they last played a final in 2010.
Argentina are sprinting to back-to-back championships and Spain is back in pursuit of football’s biggest prize, which will be one of the biggest of the tournament.
