According to sources, BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar is on his way to exit, with VVS Laxman being roped in for the post. The selection meeting for the white-ball series against the West Indies to be held on Wednesday likely be his last.
If reports are to be believed, there has been no discussion between Agarkar and BCCI officials about his future as the men’s national team chief selector. The suspense has further fuelled rumours that the squad announcement for the West Indies series could be his last.
India are set to play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies. While the T20I squad is expected to be similar to the Asian Games squad, with the matches starting from October 6, the selection committee led by Agarkar has the task of picking the ODI squad from the options available.
However, this selection could be Agarkar’s last, as a one-year extension does not appear to be on the cards. It was earlier reported that Agarkar was expected to continue in his current position until the conclusion of the ODI World Cup next year. However, there appears to have been a lot of change within the BCCI over the last few weeks.
Agarkar’s contract runs until October 4, which falls on Tuesday night. However, a report from PTI has claimed that no one from the BCCI has contacted the chairman regarding his availability beyond the current contract.
A source familiar with the matter has also revealed that Agarkar is likely to email a thank-you note to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, thanking the board for giving him the opportunity to work for three years. However, there has been no confirmation on whether the BCCI intends to move on from Agarkar.
