The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Centre to ensure daily monitoring of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on the 19th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, while recording the government’s assurance that it would provide medical intervention if advised by doctors.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia was hearing a public interest litigation seeking urgent medical care for Wangchuk amid concerns over his declining health. The court observed that the life of every citizen is valuable and stressed the need for regular medical supervision.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Wangchuk’s health was already being monitored by government doctors and medical experts. He assured the Bench that any medical assistance required, based on doctors’ advice, would be provided.
Taking note of the submission, the court directed authorities to continue daily clinical monitoring of Wangchuk’s condition and ensure timely medical intervention whenever necessary. “We appreciate the stand taken by the learned Solicitor General and direct that Wangchuk’s medical condition be clinically monitored on a daily basis and whatever medical intervention is required shall be taken,” the court said while disposing of the petition.
The public interest litigation was filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, who sought directions to the Centre and the Delhi government to ensure Wangchuk’s safety and provide necessary medical treatment.
The plea also requested that authorities shift Wangchuk to a hospital if required and administer medical support, including force-feeding and essential nutrients through a liquid diet, to protect his health.
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28. He is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak.
According to Dr Satish Lamba, the senior physician monitoring Wangchuk’s health, his weight has fallen to 56.65 kg after dropping another 500 grams in the last 24 hours. The doctor said Wangchuk has lost more than 9 kg since beginning the fast.
His latest health parameters showed a blood pressure of 105/61 mmHg, blood sugar level of 80 mg/dL and oxygen saturation of 97%.
