In one of the most high-profile Naxal attacks in Chhattisgarh, the Jhiram Ghati massacre, which killed 27 people and wiped out the state Congress leadership, the NIA court has decided to deliver its verdict on September 5.
The special court’s decision concerns 10 accused in the case, which has been going on for nearly 13 years. Originally, there were 11 accused, but one died during the hearing. The proceedings in the special NIA court concluded on August 20. The NIA was earlier scheduled to deliver its verdict on August 31.
Ahead of the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections in 2013, the Congress party’s Parivartan Yatra was returning from Sukma to Jagdalpur. During the journey, Naxals ambushed the Congress leaders’ convoy in the Darbha-Jhiram Valley.
Several prominent leaders lost their lives in the major Naxal attack, including Bastar Tiger Mahendra Karma, the then PCC president Nandkumar Patel, senior leader Vidya Charan Shukla, and Uday Mudaliyar. Many security personnel were also martyred, while several civilians lost their lives.
