Trinamool Congress’ West Bengal president Chandrima Bhattacharya on Saturday resigned from her post. Her decision once again marks the political uncertainty surrounding TMC amid reports of an exodus of leaders.

Bhattacharya, considered a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had been appointed as the state unit president after the party suffered significant losses in the Assembly elections held in May.

Her resignation comes months after the party underwent a major organisational overhaul following its electoral setback.

Following the Assembly election results, Mamata Banerjee dissolved all existing organisational committees and initiated a restructuring of the Trinamool Congress in an effort to rebuild the party.

Bhattacharya was entrusted with leading the party’s West Bengal unit during the reorganisation process.

The latest development comes amid reports of internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress. According to the information available, the party has split into factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly.

The reported internal differences have added to the political challenges facing the party after its electoral performance.

The political developments have also been accompanied by reports that 20 of the TMC’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs merged with the National Citizens’ Party of India and extended support to the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

Bhattacharya has not publicly stated the reason for stepping down from her party positions.
